Understanding frequent blood-pressure checks

If your blood pressure is high, staff may check it often to see whether treatment is working and whether it is rising. At home, some programs give you a cuff and tell you how often to check.

Most important

Ask what number means call

Ask your team what readings or symptoms mean you should call or seek urgent care. This app does not interpret readings.

What may happen
  • Repeated readings, sometimes at night.
  • Medicine adjustments based on readings.
Why

Blood pressure can change quickly after birth, especially after preeclampsia.

What varies

No universal hourly schedule was established in our research. Home-monitoring schedules are specific to programs such as MiHeart (University of Michigan).

Questions to ask

  • How often will my blood pressure be checked, and what are you watching for?
  • How often should I check it at home, and who reviews the readings?
