When a baby needs extra monitoring or NICU care

Some babies need extra monitoring, such as blood sugar checks, or care in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This can be frightening. You can ask the team to explain what is happening and how you can be involved.

Most important

Ask what is being watched

Ask what the team is checking, what would change the plan, and how you can be with your baby.

What may happen
  • Blood sugar checks, for example after a pregnancy with gestational diabetes.
  • A longer stay or transfer to a NICU or special care nursery.
Why

Some babies need more time or support to adjust after birth.

What varies

Each baby's needs and each NICU's routines are different.

Questions to ask

  • Why does my baby need extra care, and what are you watching for?
  • How can I be with my baby and help with care?
  • Who can I talk to about how I am feeling?
